6 – Basic Operations–Punch-in and punch-out38 TASCAM DA-98HRAny punch operation from now will take your settingfor pre-roll and use it when locating the tape to thepunch-in point. For example, if your preroll time hasbeen set to 10 seconds (00:00:10:00), andthe punch-in point is at 00:06:03:12, thetape will locate to 00 05 53 12 when startingrehearsal or punch-in.3 Postroll is set in the same way. Use the Ó andÁ keys until the cursor is by the Post field,and repeat the steps above.The minimum value for postroll is 3 seconds.6.6.6 Rehearsing the punch-inAfter you have set the punch points, and you havelocated the tape to the pre-roll point, as describedabove, you can rehearse the punch process.1 Press the RHSL key L so that the indicatorlights steadily, indicating that you are now inrehearsal mode.2 Press PLAY. The tape starts playing from thepre-roll point.3 At the punch-in point, monitoring changes tosource.The RECORD key flashes, and the REC FUNC-TION indicator of any armed tracks lightssteadily. However, recording is not carried out.4 At the punch-out point, monitoring changesback to tape monitoring.The tape continues playing to the post-rollpoint and then rewinds to the pre-roll point.NOTEIf the AUTO PLAY mode is active (press the AUTOPLAY key Iso that the indicator lights), playback startsagain as soon as the pre-roll point is reached.5 Repeat the rehearsal process until you are sat-isfied with the performance.6.6.7 Interrupting a rehearsal or punchrecordingVery often while rehearsing a punch-in, you will notwant to run the tape all the way to the punch-outpoint (an entry is missed, or a mistake is made earlyon in the take). In these cases, the following proce-dure applies to both rehearsal and punch recording:1 While the tape is running, press the PREROLLkey H. There is no need to press STOP first.The tape returns to the punch-in point, minusthe value specified in the punch-in offset (6.6.5,“Editing the preroll and postroll times”).NOTEThe location pre-roll time (7.1.3, “Setting the location pre-roll time”) is not used here.2 Pressing PLAY re-starts the rehearsal orpunch-in process.6.6.8 Recording the punch-in1 Make sure the tape is at the pre-roll point, andpress the AUTO PUNCH key M once.The indicator flashes, showing that the DA-98HR is in auto-punch mode.2 Press PLAY. The tape starts playing.At the punch-in point, the RECORD indicatorlights steadily, as do the REC FUNCTION indi-cators of any armed tracks. Monitoringchanges from off-tape to source and the INPUTMONITOR of any armed tracks light.Actual recording now takes place. Anyrecorded material which was previously on thearmed tracks between the punch points isreplaced by the new recording.3 At the punch-out point, the monitoring returnsto tape monitoring (the INPUT MONITOR indi-cators of armed tracks go out), and when thepost-roll point is reached, the tape rewinds tothe pre-roll point.NOTEIf the AUTO PLAY mode is active (press the AUTOPLAY key I so that the indicator lights), playback startsagain as soon as the pre-roll point is reached.4 The AUTO PUNCH indicator lights steadily,showing that the DA-98HR is now in “review”mode.
