4TNV98 & 4TNE98 Diesel Engine Section 4. Fuel System148Fuel Injection PumpRemoval of Fuel Injection Pump1. Loosen the cooling fan V-belt.2. Remove the engine coolant fan guard (ifequipped), engine coolant fan (Figure7-6, (2)),spacer (Figure7-6, (3)) if equipped, V-pulley(Figure7-6, (4)) and cooling fan V-belt (Figure7-6, (1)).Figure 7-63. Close any fuel valves in the fuel supply line.4. Place a drain pan under the fuel injection pumpto catch any spillage.5. Remove the high-pressure fuel injection lines asan assembly (Figure 7-7, (1)).NOTICETo prevent “rounding” the fuel line nuts always use a“line” or “flare nut” wrench. When loosening the fuelline nuts, always hold the fuel injection pump deliveryvalves with a “back up” wrench to prevent loosening ofthe delivery valves.6. First loosen the fuel line nuts at the fuel injectorsand then at the fuel injection pump.CAUTIONRemove or install the high-pressure fuelinjection lines as an assembly wheneverpossible. Disassembling the high-pressure fuelinjection lines from the retainers or bending anyof the fuel lines will make it difficult to reinstallthe fuel lines.7. Finish loosening all the fuel line nuts and removethe high-pressure fuel lines as an assemblybeing careful not to bend any of the fuel lines. Besure to protect the fuel system fromcontamination by covering all open connections.8. Disconnect the coolant lines from the cold startdevice (Figure 7-7, (3)) on the fuel injectionpump. Plug the open ends of the lines tominimize leakage and prevent contamination.9. Disconnect the fuel return lines from the fuelreturn fitting (Figure 7-7, (2)). Plug the openends of the lines to minimize leakage andprevent contamination.Figure 7-710. Remove the fuel supply line (Figure 7-7, (4)).Plug the open end of the line to minimizeleakage and prevent contamination.11. Remove the throttle cable from the fuel injectionpump.
