4TNV98 & 4TNE98 Diesel Engine Section 7. Starter Motor231Contact Continuity TestDepress the plunger at the bottom of the magneticswitch. Check for continuity between the “B” and“M” terminals using a multimeter (Figure11-23).The multimeter should indicate continuity. If the multimeter does not indicate continuity, replace the magnetic switch.Figure 11-23Pinion Clutch AssemblyPinion Clutch Assembly InspectionManually rotate the pinion clutch assembly in thedrive direction (Figure11-24). It should rotate freelyin the drive direction and is locked by turning it inthe opposite direction. Replace the pinion clutchassembly if the results are different.Figure 11-24Slide the pinion clutch assembly on the shaft. Itshould slide smoothly on the shaft (Figure11-25).Rust, too much grease or damage could preventthe pinion clutch from sliding smoothly. If the pinionclutch assembly does not slide smoothly, clean theshaft and pinion clutch assembly or replace thedamaged component.Figure 11-25Ball Bearing InspectionRotate each ball bearing while holding the pinionclutch assembly (Figure11-26). Replace the ballbearing if it does not rotate smoothly or hasexcessive play.Figure 11-26
