4TNV98 & 4TNE98 Diesel Engine Section 2. Periodic Maintenance59Every 1000 Hours of OperationPerform the following maintenance every 1000hours of operation.• Drain, Flush and Refill Cooling System With NewCoolant• Adjust Intake/Exhaust Valve ClearanceDrain, Flush and Refill Cooling System WithNew CoolantDANGERSCALD HAZARD!NEVER remove the radiator cap if the engine ishot. Steam and hot engine coolant will spurt outand seriously burn you. Allow the engine tocool down before you attempt to remove theradiator cap.Tighten the radiator cap securely after youcheck the radiator. Steam can spurt out duringengine operation if the cap is loose.ALWAYS check the level of the engine coolantby observing the reserve tank.Failure to comply will result in death or seriousinjury.WARNINGBURN HAZARD!Wait until the engine cools before you drain theengine coolant. Hot engine coolant may splashand burn you.Failure to comply could result in death orserious injury.CAUTIONCOOLANT HAZARD!Wear eye protection and rubber gloves whenyou handle long life or extended life enginecoolant. If contact with the eyes or skin shouldoccur, flush eyes and wash immediately withclean water.Failure to comply may result in minor ormoderate injury.CAUTIONALWAYS be environmentally responsible.Follow the guidelines of the EPA or othergovernmental agencies for the proper disposalof hazardous materials such as engine oil, diesel fuel and engine coolant. Consult the localauthorities or reclamation facility.NEVER dispose of hazardous materialsirresponsibly by dumping them into a sewer, onthe ground, or into ground water or waterways.Failure to follow these procedures mayseriously harm the environment.Engine coolant contaminated with rust or scalereduces the cooling effect. Even when extended lifeengine coolant is properly mixed, the enginecoolant gets contaminated as its ingredientsdeteriorate. Drain, flush and refill the coolingsystem with new coolant every 1000 hours or oncea year, whichever comes first.1. Allow engine and coolant to cool.2. Remove the radiator cap (Figure 5-16, (1)).3. Remove the drain plug or open the drain cock(Figure 5-16, (2)) at the lower portion of theradiator and drain the engine coolant.
