2-14 CHAPTER 2: INSTALLATIONWiringConsiderationsYou must consider the wiring scheme of your cabling when you connect adevice such as a host, terminal, modem, or other serial equipment to aserial connector on a 16-port asynchronous module. The asynchronous module’s serial ports are configured as DCE forattachment to DTE devices, such as terminals. With the right type of cable, you can also attach these ports to DCE devices, such as modems. SeeAppendix A, “Pin Assignments,” for pin assignments of these connectors.Connecting theCablesYou need a small slotted screwdriver. To cable hosts, terminals, modems, orother serial equipment to a 16-port asynchronous module’s serial connector, follow these steps:1 Decide which cabling options to use to connect your hosts, terminals, modems, or other serial equipment to each serial connector—for example,an extension cable, octopus cable, and D-type adapter, or an extensioncable, patch panel, 6-wire cable, and D-type adapter.2 Assemble the cables, patch panels, and adapters.3 Cable hosts, terminals, modems, or other serial equipment to each serialconnector.4 Install a cable strain relief mechanism for each module. This mechanism consists of a metal bracket and a captive screw.Install one bracket in the upper portion of the back panel between the twoserial connectors of each 16-port asynchronous module (see Figure 2-11).a Slip the long bar with curved edges at one end of the bracket over eachserial cable connector, and the integral tab at the other end of thebracket into the small hole in the panel.b Fasten the bracket to the panel with the screw. Do not overtighten.CS3000BookFile Page 14 Tuesday, October 15, 1996 5:12 PM
