4 CONFIGURATIONTo configure CS/3000 and CS/3100 firmware settings, use the FirmwareConfiguration Utility. Firmware is preset at the factory for basic installations; inmost cases you do not need to reconfigure it. This chapter describes how tomake changes if necessary. For information on configuring communications server software, refer to theMultiprotocol Communications Server Operation Guide, MultiprotocolCommunications Server Reference Guide, and software release notes. If you are booting your server from a diskette, software parameter values arestored on the diskette. 3Com recommends that you make a backup copy ofyour working diskette each time you modify software parameters. If for anyreason the data in your current working diskette becomes corrupted, you canuse the backup copy to restore the desired settings. For instructions forcopying diskettes, refer to “Copying and Formatting Diskettes”.Entering theFirmware MonitorTo use the Firmware Configuration Utility, you must place the communicationsserver in monitor mode. This mode suspends normal operation and allowsinteraction only with the monitor command interface. After using the monitor, you must usually reboot the communications server to resume operation. For a complete description of commands available in monitor mode, refer toAppendix C, “Monitor Utility.”During normal operation, you can access the monitor by turning on the serverwithout a boot source, by configuring firmware to access the monitor at start-up, or (if you have Network Manager privilege) by entering the MONitor soft-ware command. For a full description of these procedures, refer to Appendix C,“Monitor Utility.” If you are configuring firmware for the first time, you shouldturn on the server without a boot source, using the following procedure:1 Connect a terminal to the console port, using a modem cable. For wiringinformation, refer to Appendix A, “Pin Assignments.”CS3000BookFile Page 1 Tuesday, October 15, 1996 5:12 PM
