TroubleshootingAppendix A-7MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTINGA■ Cause/remedy/check details
Cause 1The machine is not correctly threaded. The bobbin threading is incorrect.Return the upper thread tension to the standard setting, and then refer to “Upper thread tightened up” on page A-4to correct the threading. The upper threading is incorrect.Return the upper thread tension to the standard setting, and then refer to “Tangled thread on wrong side of fabric”on page A-5 to correct the upper threading.
Cause 2A needle and thread appropriate for the fabric are notbeing used. The machine needle that should be used depends on thetype of fabric sewn and the thread thickness. If a needle and thread appropriate for the fabric are notbeing used, the thread tension will not be adjustedcorrectly, causing wrinkles in the fabric or skippedstitches.• Refer to “Fabric/Thread/Needle Combinations” in the“Basic operations” section to check that a needle andthread appropriate for the fabric are being used.
Cause 3An appropriate upper tension is not selected. The setting selected for the upper thread tension is notappropriate.Refer to “Setting the thread tension” in the “Basicoperations” section to select an appropriate threadtension. The appropriate thread tension differs depending on thetype of fabric and thread being used.* Adjust the thread tension while test sewing on apiece of scrap fabric that is the same as that used inyour project.• If the bobbin thread is visible from the right side ofthe fabricTurn the thread tension dial to the left to decrease thetension of the upper thread.• If the upper thread is visible from the wrong side ofthe fabricTurn the thread tension dial to the right to increasethe tension of the upper thread.Fabric is caught in the machine and cannotbe removedIf the fabric is caught in the machine and cannot be removed, the thread may have become tangled under the needle plate.Follow the procedure described below to remove the fabricfrom the machine. If the operation cannot be completedaccording to this procedure, instead of attempting to remove itforcefully, contact your nearest authorized Baby Lock retailer.■ Removing the fabric from the machineaImmediately stop the machine.bTurn off the machine.cRemove the needle. If the needle is lowered into the fabric, turn thehandwheel away from you (clockwise) to raise theneedle out of the fabric, and then remove the needle.• Refer to “Replacing the needle” in the “Basicoperations” section.dRemove the presser foot and presser foot holder.• Refer to “Replacing the presser foot” and “Removingand attaching the presser foot holder” in the “Basicoperations” section.eLift up the fabric and cut the threads below it.If the fabric can be removed, remove it. Continue withthe following steps to clean the race.fRemove the needle plate cover.1 Needle plate cover• Refer to “Cleaning the race” on page A-2.Note• If the upper threading and bobbin threading areincorrect, the thread tension cannot be adjustedcorrectly. Check the upper threading and bobbinthreading first, and then adjust the threadtension.1
