Sewing Various FabricsS-4Sewing thick fabrics■ If the fabric does not fit under the presser footThe presser foot lever can be raised to two differentpositions. If the fabric does not fit under the presser foot, for example, when sewing together thick fabrics, raise thepresser foot lever to its highest position so that the fabriccan be placed under the presser foot.■ If the fabric does not feedWhen sewing thick fabric such as denim or quilting, thefabric may not feed at the start of sewing if the presser footis not level, as shown below. In this case, use the presserfoot locking pin (black button on the left side) of zigzagfoot “J” so that the presser foot remains level while sewing, allowing the fabric to be fed smoothly. If the presser foot misalignment is too large, place thickpaper or fabric (with the same thickness as the fabric beingsewn) under the heel of the presser foot to be able to startsewing smoothly.1 Sewing direction2 Misalignment3 Fabric being sewn4 Fabric or thick paperaRaise the presser foot lever.bAlign the beginning of stitching, and then position thefabric.cWhile holding zigzag foot “J” level, push in and holdthe presser foot locking pin (black button on the leftside), and lower the presser foot lever.1 Presser foot locking pin (black button)dRelease the presser foot locking pin (black button).→ The presser foot remains level, allowing the fabric tobe fed.→ After the seam is sewn, the presser foot will return toits original angle.Sewing thin fabricsWhen sewing thin fabrics such as chiffon, the stitching maybecome misaligned or the fabric may not feed correctly. Movethe needle (be sure to use a fine needle) to the furthest left orright hand position so that the fabric does not get pulled downinto the feed dog area. If this occurs or there is shrinkage ofthe stitching, place non-woven water-soluble stabilizer underthe fabric and sew them together. Using the straight stitchneedle plate* and straight stitch foot* is also effective whensewing thin fabrics.* Sold separately with some models.1 Water-soluble stabilizer (non-woven)Sewing Various Fabricsbad cMemo• You may find adjusting the presser foot pressuredial helpful when sewing thick fabrics.CAUTION• If fabric more than 6 mm (15/64 inch) thick issewn or if the fabric is pushed with too muchforce, the needle may bend or break.11
