QUICK START12 SmartSwitch Remote Access ModuleACCESSING A NEW M ODULEThe two methods of accessing a new module are:• access through a PC using a terminal application• access by Telneting to the module using the initial default IP addressOnce you have used one of the two methods to access to the module, you should:• establish an administration session with the module• assign the module’s new IP addressFor more detailed instructions, refer to the sections below.I NITIAL A SSESS USING A PC AND A T ERMINAL A PPLICATIONConnect one end of the supplied null modem cable to the RS232 console port on the module, andthe other end of the cable to the communication port on the PC. On the PC you must then executea communication package to emulate a terminal (VT100).Use the following default values for your communication package:Baud rate 9600Parity NoneData bits 8Stop bits 1Duplex FullAfter you have connection to the module, you will be ready to establish an administration session.I NITIAL A CCESS U SING TELNETYou can use a remote device to Telnet into module using the module’s initial default IP address(192.186.254.254). The remote device can be a device with Telnet client software such as a PC or aUNIX workstation, or it can be a second module or a Cabletron CyberSWITCH. Note that themodules and CyberSWITCH systems have built-in Telnet client software.If a CyberSWITCH or second module is acting as the Telnet client, simply enter the followingconsole command to Telnet into the module:telnet <192.186.254.254>If a remote device other than a Cabletron product is acting as the Telnet client, use the device’sTelnet application to connect to the initial default IP address.After you make a Telnet connection you will be ready to establish an administration session (referto the following section for instructions).E STABLISHING AN A DMINISTRATION S ESSIONOnce you have connected to the module using either a terminal application or Telnet, you will beprompted for a login ID and the initial password. Enter admin for both.
