Appendix D. Dual Power InstallationThe zSeries 800 models are designed with a fully redundant power system. Eachcomputer has two line cords attached to two power input ports which, in turn, powera fully redundant power distribution system within the computer. To take fulladvantage of the redundancy/reliability that is built into the computer system, thesystem is intended to be powered from two distribution panels.I M P O R T A N TEach power cord is intended to be supplied by a different source.Since the zSeries 800 operates on single-phase power, power redundancy isrealized only if the source to each line cord is different. Failure to provide separatepower sources will lead to system failure in the event of a power outage. Here we will present three examples of redundancy.Example 1 (redundant distribution panel and switch gear)In this example, the computer receives power from two separate power distributionpanels. Each distribution panel receives power from a separate piece of buildingswitch gear. This level of redundancy is not available in most facilities.Switch GearSwitch GearDistributionPanelDistributionPanelFigure D-1.
