5Surface ControlsPilotless IgnitionPilotless ignition eliminates theneed for a constant standingpilot light. Each surface burnerhas a spark ignitor. Use carewhen cleaning around thesurface burner.If the surface burner doesnot light, check if ignitor isbroken, soiled or wet.Setting the controls:The size and type of cookware will affect the heat setting. Forinformation on cookware and other factors affecting heatsettings, refer to “Cooking Made Simple” booklet.1. Place a pan on the burner grate.• The burner flame may lift off or appear separated fromthe port if a pan is not placed on the grate.2. Push in and turn the knob counterclockwise to the Lightsetting.• A clicking (spark) sound will be heard and the burnerwill light. (All five ignitors will spark when any surfaceburner knob is turned to the Light position.)3. After the burner lights, turn knob to desired flame size.• The ignitor will continue to spark until the knob isturned past the Light position.4. After cooking, turn knob to OFF. Remove pan.Operating During aPower FailureSurface Control KnobsUse to turn on the surface burners. An infinite choice of heatsettings is available from Low to High. The knobs can be seton or between any of the settings.Graphics next to the knob identify which burnerthe knob controls. For example, the graphic at leftshows the right front burner location.SURFACE C OOKINGCAUTION• If flame should go out during a cooking operation, turnthe burner off. If a strong gas odor is detected, open awindow and wait five minutes before relighting theburner.• Be sure all surface controls are set in the OFF positionprior to supplying gas to the range.• NEVER touch cooktop until it has cooled. Expect someparts of the cooktop, especially around the burners, tobecome warm or hot during cooking. Use potholders toprotect hands.Low HighLightCAUTIONWhen lighting the surface burners, be sure all of thecontrols are in the OFF position. Strike the match first andhold it in position before turning the knob to Light.High: Use to bring liquid to a boil, or reachpressure in a pressure cooker. Alwaysreduce setting to a lower heat when liquidsbegin to boil or foods begin to cook.An intermediate flame size is used tocontinue cooking. Food will not cook anyfaster when a higher flame setting is usedthan needed to maintain a gentle boil.Water boils at the same temperaturewhether boiling gently or vigorously.Low: Use to simmer foods, keep foodswarm and melt chocolate or butter. Somecooking may take place on the Lowsetting if the pan is covered. Be sureflame is stable.1. Hold a lighted match to the desired surface burner head.2. Push in and turn the control knob slowly to Light.3. When the burner lights, adjust the flame to the desiredlevel.Suggested Heat Settings
