Topics include• Print quality maintenance• Simple troubleshooting• Operator Panel alert messages• Clearing paper jams• Print quality problems• Network printing problemsPrint Quality MaintenanceHere are some suggestions for maintaining the highest printquality from your printer.• Replace the Toner Modules immediately when thedisplay indicates that replacement is necessary.• Use high-quality paper or transparencies to obtain sharp,crisp characters and maximum contrast.• Follow the cleaning procedures described in Chapter 8,“Maintaining Your Printer.”Simple TroubleshootingHere are some simple resolutions to occasional printerproblems.Power light is off…Check that the power cord is plugged into a live power outletand the printer power switch is turned on.Power light is on but printer does not print…• Verify that the Online indicator light is on (if it is not,press the Online button).• Verify that all interface cable connections are tightlysecured.Paper does not output to the output tray…Check for paper jam or misfeed.Paper does not stack correctly…Check that the paper is between 16 and 90 lbs. base weight.Printer MessagesPrinter messages provide useful information for progresschecks and troubleshooting. These messages are displayedon the printer Operator Panel.Status MessagesStatus messages appear on the printer operator panel andreport normal operating conditions. No action is necessary.The table on page 52, summarizes status messages.Alert MessagesAlert messages appear on the printer Operator Panel when acondition occurs that causes normal printing to besuspended. Often, operations can be recovered withoutlosing data by removing the source of the problem. Otherconditions require the printer to be turned off and then onagain to reset it, in which case, any data is lost. If JamRecovery is set to On, the printer will automatically reprintlost pages of a PostScript print job after a jam is cleared, aslong as you do not turn off the printer. Jam Recovery can onlybe set in the Operator Panel menu tree (see page 55).The table on page 104, summarizes alert messages and theaction you can take to correct them.Service MessagesIf a major problem occurs, the Operator Panel will displaythe SERVICE CALL message followed by a code, such as F5.You must call an authorized service representative to resolvethis problem. Report the code when you call to assist indiagnosing the problem. See page 115 for more informationabout getting service.
