Upgrading Your Server 9-41Disk Array Controller BoardThe disk array controller board (N8103-80/81/90/91) is an optional PCI board developed to improvedata reliability.NOTE: The server contains onboard RAID controller. See the onlinedocument in NEC EXPRESSBUILDER CD-ROM for configuringRAID using the onboard RAID controller.Installing the disk array controller board allows you to use hard disk drives in the device bays of theserver and those in the optional additional disk unit in the disk array configuration.Function of diskarray controller DescriptionLevel Supports RAID0, 1, 5, 10, or 50.Hot plug Allows a device such as a hard disk drive to be replaced under the systemoperation status.Auto rebuild After the defected hard disk drive is replaced with a new one, the data savedin the defected hard disk drive is automatically recovered from the datasaved in the remaining hard disk drives.Expand capacity The addition of a hard disk drive without system interruption canautomatically expand the area in which disk arrays are available and logicaldrive capacity.CautionsNote the following on the configuration of a disk array. The disk array controller board is easily affected by static electricity. Handle the diskarray controller board after making your body contact with a metallic frame section of theserver to discharge the static electricity on your body. Do not make bare hands contactwith terminals and components on the disk array controller board. In addition, do not putthe disk array controller board on a desk directly. See "Static Precautions" for details ofthe static electricity. To change the disk array configuration or the RAID, the hard disk drives must beinitialized. If important data is saved in the hard disk drives used to constitute a disk array, first back up the data in other hard disk drives before installing boards and configuring thedisk array. At least two hard disk drives are required to configure a disk array. Hard disk drives used in the disk array configuration should have the same disk revolutionrate and capacity in packs. See "PCI Board" in this Chapter for the slot in which a board can be installed. Up to four disk array controller boards can be installed in the server.
