105Nortel Business Secure Router 222 Configuration — BasicsChapter 7WAN screensThis chapter describes how to configure WAN settings.WAN OverviewThis section provides background information on features that you cannotconfigure in the Wizard.7.1 TCP/IP Priority (Metric)The metric represents the cost of transmission. A router determines the best routefor transmission by choosing a path with the lowest cost. RIP routing uses hopcount as the measurement of cost, with a minimum of 1 for directly connectednetworks. The number must be between 1 and 15; a number greater than 15 meansthe link is down. The smaller the number, the lower the cost.1 The metric sets the priority for the routes of the Business Secure Router to theInternet. Each route must have a unique metric.2 The priority of the WAN port route must always be higher than the dialbackup and traffic redirect route priorities. If the WAN port route has a metric of 1 and the traffic redirect route has a metricof 2 and dial backup route has a metric of 3, then the WAN port route acts as theprimary default route. If the WAN port route fails to connect to the Internet, theBusiness Secure Router tries the traffic redirect route next. In the same manner, the Business Secure Router uses the dial backup route if the traffic redirect routealso fails.
