20 InstallationSetting the Answering ModeThe answering mode determines how your OKIFAXhandles incoming fax and voice calls. The standby displayshows the current answering mode.Answering Mode OptionsThe answering mode you choose depends on how youuse your OKIFAX and what telephone equipment is con-nected to it. Read through the mode descriptions below, then follow the instructions to change to the mode thatbest fits your needs.Manual Receive mode [TEL]: If you use the same line for bothfax and telephone calls and the majority of your incomingcalls are telephone calls, then the TEL answering mode isyour best choice. Each time someone calls, your OKIFAXrings like a telephone—it does not automatically answer. You can answer from either an external handset or tele-phone connected to your OKIFAX. If you pick up thehandset and hear fax tones, press the Start key to receivethe fax. If you do not answer the phone and someonetries to send you a fax message, your machine will not ac-cept it.Auto Receive mode [FAX]: If your OKIFAX is connected to atelephone line reserved only for fax communications, usethe Auto Receive mode. Your OKIFAX assumes all in-coming calls are fax messages and automatically receivesthem.Telephone/Fax Auto Switch mode [T/F]: When incoming calls are amixture of fax and telephone calls, your best choice is theTelephone/Fax mode. In this mode, your OKIFAX de-tects whether the incoming call is a fax or voice call. Whenthe call is from another fax machine, your machineswitches to fax mode and automatically receives the mes-sage. When the call is a voice call, your OKIFAX rings likea telephone. If you do not answer within 35 seconds, yourOKIFAX switches back to fax mode to allow the callingparty to send a fax manually.Telephone Answering Device mode [TAD]: Use this mode if youhave connected an answering machine to your OKIFAX.Like Telephone/Fax mode, the Telephone AnsweringDevice mode detects whether an incoming call is a fax orvoice call. If it is a fax call, your OKIFAX receives the fax.If it is a voice call, your OKIFAX rings just as it does inManual Receive mode. If no one answers the call, your an-swering machine activates, allowing the calling party toleave a message. If you set the Remote Receive user func-tion (page 52), the caller can send a fax at any time duringor after the recorded message by using their keypad to en-ter the remote receive number you have programmed. This number activates fax reception. Add something likethis to your answering machine message: “To send a faxnow, press XX [the programmed number].”Memory Receive mode [MEM]: When set to this mode, yourOKIFAX stores received faxes in memory and does notprint them out immediately.
