112 TASCAM DM-24 Reference Manual15 – High sampling frequencyThe way in which the DM-24 operates in high sam-pling frequency mode (88.2k and 96k) is slightly dif-ferent in many cases to the operation in normalsampling frequency mode (44.1k and 48k).This section describes the differences between highsampling frequency mode and normal sampling fre-quency mode. The high sampling frequency can be obtained inter-nally, when the DM-24 acts as the word sync clockfor the whole of the audio system, or the DM-24 canact as a word sync slave, taking word sync from othersuitably-equipped devices. To select high sampling frequencyUse the DIGITAL key (SHIFT and AUX 5-6), andchoose the CLOCK screen. At the top of this screen is the Hi-sampling / Normal-sampling pair of on-screen radio buttons.Select the Hi-sampling button and press ENTER.Changing from normal to high sampling frequencymode, and the other way round brings up a pop-upmessage which asks for the DM-24 to be turned offand on again. The sampling frequencies displayed on the screen asavailable for use change, as shown here.NOTEIf other devices are not connected properly, this maycause noise in the monitoring system when the DM-24restarts. Make sure that all monitoring equipment lev-els are turned down (or the monitoring equipment isturned off) when making these changes. When the high sampling frequency mode is selected, many of the control screens change as explained inthis section. The word sync output from the DM-24 can be set tobe DOUBLE or NORMAL speed in high sampling fre-quency mode. This may be necessary if the DM-24 isto act as a word sync master to another device thatcannot accept double-speed word sync.NOTEThe DM-24 itself can only accept normal-speed wordsync when it is in high sampling frequency mode.Constraints on other devicesWhen using the DM-24 is high sampling frequencymode, other digital audio devices must be compatiblewith this mode (that is, they must be capable ofaccepting and/or transmitting digital audio data atthese high sampling frequencies.Such devices are the TASCAM DA-98HR and theTASCAM MX-2424.When connecting to other devices via AES/EBUconnections made using the optional AES3 slot card, there are some important points to be noted. The SLOT screen of the DIGITAL display shows this:There are two ways in which AES/EBU data can besent at high frequencies.
