16 – Options—Cascade card120 TASCAM DM-24 Reference ManualTypically, monitoring and stereo outputs should beconnected to the cascade master, but there are a num-ber of occasions when these outputs may be usedfrom the slave as well as from the master. For example:• Using the stereo buss of both units would allow thestereo buss of one unit to be used dry, with theother unit’s stereo buss being processed (compres-sor, etc.).• The digital outputs (AES/EBU, SPDIF), togetherwith the balanced analog) allow for up to 6 differ-ent stereo mixes to be output simultaneously).• The monitor outputs on the slave (CR andSTUDIO) could be used to drive a different set ofmonitor speakers (for example mid-field monitorsand smaller computer-type speakers, while themaster unit drives main and near-field speakers).Cascaded facilitiesSoloing and muting When two units are cas-caded, the soloing and muting can be shared. How-ever, note that mute groups and fader groups are notcascaded.Snapshots Snapshot recall and store is cascaded. In other words, naming and storing a snapshot on themaster also names and stores it on the slave, andrecalling this snapshot on the master also recalls it onthe slave. This data must be dumped and reloaded individuallyfrom each unit for further use.Automation When automation is taking place, themaster must receive external timecode (either LTC orMTTC). This timecode is passed through the cascadeconnection to synchronize the slave automation.NOTEThe automation UNDO facility is local to one unit onlyand is not cascaded.MIDI Control Change Each DM-24 in a cascadecan be set to send and receive MIDI Control Changemessages which can be used to control DAWs,. Sincethese can be set independently for each unit in thecascade, a very large number of MIDI controllers canbe assigned and used when using two DM-24 unitscascaded together.Cascading and effectsWhen two units are cascaded, there are four internaleffects units in total. These four effects are all avail-able for assignment from any aux send on either unit. For example, a reverb could be set up on aux 3, achorus effect on aux 4, a delay on aux 5, and a phasedon aux 6, across both units.NOTEOnly the “local” effects can be used with inserts andassignable inserts on each unit.See the separate effects documentation for furtherdetails of assigning effects.
