80 TASCAM DM-24 Reference Manual11 – Machine Control/LocationThe DM-24 is capable of acting as a remote controlunit for a wide variety of external devices.The exact functionality of the machine controldepends, of course, on the device to be controlled.The device control is carried out through the DTRScontrol port, the MIDI connections (for MMC), orthe serial port (RS-422).Different devices can be selected for simultaneouscontrol by the DM-24, with different devices beingcontrolled in different ways. For instance, it is possi-ble to select one device to have its transport functionscontrolled by the DM-24, while the DM-24 controlsthe track arming functions of another device.NOTEIn this section, the term “controller” is used to refer to apart of the DM-24 software controlling an externaldevice, rather than a hardware feature of the device orthe DM-24.Selecting devices for controlThe EXT CTRL – MIDI/MC key is used to set up thecontrol of external devices.1 With the SHIFT indicator lit, press the EXTCTRL [MIDI/MC] key.2 Use the second soft key to bring up themachine control screen (MACHINE CTRL):3 With the cursor pointing to either the <-ADDor INFO buttons, use the dial to scroll throughthe list of devices on the right of the screenthat may be controlled by the DM-24(SUPPORTED DEVICES).4 When a device to be controlled by the DM-24is selected in the list, move the cursor to the<-ADD button, and press ENTER. The devicewill be added to the list.To obtain more information regarding a particularitem in the list of devices which may be controlled bythe DM-24, highlight the item, move the cursor to theINFO button, and press ENTER. A popup screen pro-vides information regarding the list item.At the bottom of the list is a key to the method usedfor controlling each item in the list:The current list of devices (at the time of writing) is:Other devices may be added to the list of supporteddevices in the future. If the list does not contain thename of a device that you wish to control, pleasecontact your TASCAM dealer regarding the avail-ability of a software upgrade which contains the con-trol capability for your device.Up to 16 devices may be added to the Machine Con-trol List.
