TASCAM HS-20 11113 – Operation with timecode synchronizationIn this chapter, we explain playback synchronized withtimecode, which is possible with an optional SY-2 installed. For recording and playback, this unit can be synchronized withSMPTE timecode input through the TIMECODE IN connector onthe SY-2 installed in the rear panel or with its built-in timecodegenerator (“master timecode” hereafter).Timecode synchronization differs according to the operationmode.Playback synchronized with timecodeTimeline modeIn timeline mode, playback can be synchronized with the mastertimecode. When playing back with timecode synchronization, whenplayback starts, it synchronizes with the master timecode.Take modeThis mode does not support playback synchronization withtimecode.Playlist ModeThis mode does not support playback synchronization withtimecode.Basic operation1. In timeline mode, load the folder that you want to use forrecording or playback.2. Either of the following operations will enable synchronizedplayback or recording.o While pressing and holding the SHIFT key, press the CALL[CHASE] key on the front panel.o On the SYNC page of the SYNC T/C screen, set TC Chase toON.The TC indicator on the Home Screen will change to theCHASE indicator.3. Press the PLAY key to start timecode synchronized playbackor the PLAY and RECORD keys to start timecode synchro-nized recording. The CHASE indicator on the Home Screenappears green.4. Press the STOP key during recording or playback withtimecode synchronization to stop recording/playback. TheCHASE indicator on the Home Screen blinks when stopped.5 To resume recording or playback with timecode synchroni-zation, repeat steps 3 and 4.6. Either of the following operations will turn synchronizationoff.o While pressing and holding the SHIFT key, press the CALL[CHASE] key on the front panel.o On the SYNC page of the SYNC T/C screen, set TC Chase toOFF.o After doing this, playback and other unit operationscontinue. The CHASE indicator on the Home Screen isreplaced with the TC indicator.Timecode offsetYou can set an offset for master timecode synchronization.By doing so, you can synchronize to master timecode forplayback with a set time difference (see “SYNC page” on page82).RechaseThis unit continues to monitor master timecode even aftersynchronized playback starts. Should the playback time of thisunit and the master timecode become unsynchronized for anyreason, the unit can “rechase” the timecode. You can set whether or not the unit uses rechase and the degreeof the discrepancy before rechasing (see “SYNC page” on page82).Recording synchronized withtimecodeTimeline modeIn timeline mode, recording can be synchronized with mastertimecode. When recording with timecode synchronization, mastertimecode is captured the instant that recording starts, andrecording starts from that time (timecode time) on the timeline.Take modeChase and rechase are not possible. The timecode from the built-in timecode generator is capturedat the beginning of recording as the file starting time.Playlist ModeIn playlist mode, recording is not possible regardless oftimecode synchronization status.CAUTIONDuring synchronized recording, this unit only synchronizesto master timecode once at the start of recording. There isno rechase function as there is with synchronized playback.
