Page 28 FT-897D OPERATING MANUALAM/FM TUNING D IAL O PERATIONIn the AM and FM modes, the DIAL knob is locked out (viathe setting of Menu Mode No-004 [AM&FM DIAL]) so asto allow “channelized” tuning on these modes. To adjust theoperating frequency, simply rotate the MEM/VFO CH knob.If you wish to enable the DIAL for tuning in the AM and FMmodes, change the setting of Menu Mode No-004 [AM&FMDIAL]. See page 56 for details.The “channelized” mode of tuning on AM andFM automatically rounds off the frequency tothe next “logical” step when you rotate theMEM/VFO CH knob one “click” in either direction. Thiseliminates the inconvenience of having to preset the fre-quency to an “even” channel.RECEIVER ACCESSORIESAUTOMATIC P OWER -O FF F EATUREThe APO feature helps conserve battery life by automati-cally turning the transceiver off after a user-defined periodof time within which there has been no dial or key activity.The available selections for the time before power-off are 1~ 6 hours, as well as “APO Off.” The default condition forthe APO is OFF, and here is the procedure for activating it:1. Press and hold the [F] key for one second to enter theMenu mode.2. Rotate the MEM/VFO CH knob to recall Menu ModeNo-007 [APO TIME].3. Rotate the DIAL knob to select the desired time periodafter which the radio will automatically shut down.4. Press and hold in the [F] key for one second to save thenew setting and exit to normal operation.Once you have programmed a time interval, the APO count-down timer will start whenever some front panel action (tun-ing, transmission, etc.) is completed.When the APO is activated, the “ ” icon will appear at thecenter top on the LCD. If there is no action by you withinthe time interval programmed, the microprocessor will shutdown the radio automatically.Just press and hold in the POWER switch for one second toturn the transceiver back on after an APO shutdown, as usual.The APO feature will be disabled while usingthe Beacon or ARTS features, even if the APOfeature is set to “ON.”
