101Using NavigationNavigation operationWhat is navigation?The term ”navigation” (lat. navigare = to travel bysea) is generally understood to mean the determi-nation of a vehicle’s location, the determination ofits direction and its distance from the desired des-tination and the required route. As navigation aids,stars, prominent landmarks, compass and satellitesare used.With OnlinePro, location is determined with theGPS receiver (GPS = Global Positioning System).The direction and distance from the destination aredetermined using a digital street map, a navigationcomputer and sensors. A speedometer and reversesignal are additionally used to calculate the route.For safety reasons, route guidance is predominant-ly in spoken form supported by a direction indica-tor on the display.Navigation CDsTwo navigation CDs are supplied with thenavigation unit.These CDs contain a digitised street map. One CDfor Northern Europe (CD no. 1) and one CD forSouthern Europe (CD no. 2) are supplied.The complete trunk road network and alldestination centres in the digitised area of Northernand Southern Europe are available on the CDs.All digitised roads of the northern countries arealso included on the Northern Europe CD. Alldigitised roads of the southern countries are alsoincluded on the Southern Europe CD.In these detailed areas of the Northern or SouthernEurope CD road map, motorways, regional roadsand unclassified roads as well as country roads arestored. Larger cities and communities arecomprehensively covered. For smaller towns andcommunities, the regional and unclassified roadsor access roads and the town centres are included.One-way streets, pedestrian zones, turning bansand other traffic regulations are taken into accountas far as possible.There may be discrepancies between the data onthe navigation CD and the actual local situation,due to permanent changes to road systems andtheir traffic regulations.Navigation with two European CDsSafety Instructions• The rules of the Road Traffic Regulations(RTR) apply.• Observation of traffic signs and local trafficregulations must always take priority.• Traffic guidance is restricted to passenger ve-hicles.
