Chapter 2. Blade server power, controls, and indicatorsThis chapter describes the power features, how to turn on and turn off the bladeserver, and the functions of the controls and indicators.Turning on the blade serverAfter you connect the BladeCenter unit to power through the BladeCenter unit, theblade server can start in any of the following ways:v You can press the power-control button on the front of the blade server (behindthe control panel door) to start the server.Notes:1. Wait until the power-on LED on the blade server flashes slowly beforepressing the blade server power-control button. During this time, the serviceprocessor in the BladeCenter management module is initializing; therefore,the power-control button on the blade server does not respond.2. While the blade server is powering up, the power-on LED on the front of theserver is lit. See “Blade server controls and LEDs” on page 10 for thepower-on LED states.v If a power failure occurs, the BladeCenter unit and then the blade server canstart automatically when power is restored (if the blade server is configuredthrough the management module to do so).v You can turn on the blade server remotely by means of the service processor inthe BladeCenter management module.v If the operating system supports the Wake on LAN feature and the blade serverpower-on LED is flashing slowly, the Wake on LAN feature can turn on the bladeserver, if the Wake on LAN feature has not been disabled through themanagement module Web interface.Turning off the blade serverWhen you turn off the blade server, it is still connected to power through theBladeCenter unit. The blade server can respond to requests from the serviceprocessor, such as a remote request to turn on the blade server. To remove allpower from the blade server, you must remove it from the BladeCenter unit.Shut down the operating system before you turn off the blade server. See theoperating-system documentation for information about shutting down the operatingsystem.The blade server can be turned off in any of the following ways:v You can press the power-control button on the blade server (behind the controlpanel door). This starts an orderly shutdown of the operating system, if thisfeature is supported by the operating system.Note: After turning off the blade server, wait at least 5 seconds before you pressthe power-control button to turn on the blade server again.v If the operating system stops functioning, you can press and hold thepower-control button for more than 4 seconds to turn off the blade server.v The management module can turn off the blade server.© Copyright IBM Corp. 2003 9
