Chapter 6. Installing the operating systemTo install the operating system on a blade server, you can use any of the followingmethods:v Use the ServerGuide Setup and Installation CD to install a supported MicrosoftWindows operating system.v Use the Remote Deployment Manager (RDM) Version 4.11 Update 3 (or later)program to install a supported Microsoft Windows operating system or Red HatAdvanced Server 2.1.Note: To determine if the operating system you plan to install supports RDM, goto http://www.ibm.com/pc/ww/eserver/xseries/systems_management/index.html.v Download the latest operating system installation instructions from the IBMSupport Web page at http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/ and install the operatingsystem at the BladeCenter unit (local deployment).Note: Local deployment for Microsoft Windows 2000 requires an integrated CDthat contains Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 applied. Instructions forcreating a Windows 2000 Integrated CD are contained in the latestoperating system installation instructions for Windows 2000 on the IBMSupport Web page.Important:1. The operating system in the blade server must provide USB support for theblade server to recognize and use the keyboard, mouse, CD-ROM drive, anddiskette drive. The BladeCenter unit uses USB for internal communication withthese devices.2. Some operating systems, such as Red Hat Linux 7.3, permit you to select thetype of mouse being used. If offered this choice, select USB instead of PS/2.Although the mouse is a PS/2-style device, communication with the mouse isthrough an internal USB bus in the BladeCenter chassis; therefore, theoperating system in the blade server must recognize the mouse as a USBdevice.Using RDM Version 4.11 Update 3 or laterYou can use the RDM version 4.11 Update 3 (or later) program to install asupported Microsoft Windows operating system or Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1 ona blade server.
