Health and safety information180Appendix B: Health andsafety informationExposure to Radio Frequency (RF)SignalsCertification Information (SAR)Your wireless phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. It isdesigned and manufactured not to exceed the exposurelimits for radio frequency (RF) energy set by the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC) of the U.S.government. These FCC exposure limits are derived fromthe recommendations of two expert organizations, theNational Counsel on Radiation Protection and Measurement(NCRP) and the Institute of Electrical and ElectronicsEngineers (IEEE). In both cases, the recommendationswere developed by scientific and engineering experts drawnfrom industry, government, and academia after extensivereviews of the scientific literature related to the biologicaleffects of RF energy. The exposure limit set by the FCC for wireless mobilephones employs a unit of measurement known as theSpecific Absorption Rate (SAR). The SAR is a measure ofthe rate of absorption of RF energy by the human bodyexpressed in units of watts per kilogram (W/kg). The FCCrequires wireless phones to comply with a safety limit of1.6 watts per kilogram (1.6 W/kg). The FCC exposure limitincorporates a substantial margin of safety to giveadditional protection to the public and to account for anyvariations in measurements.
