8-1028Measuring the forward gear backlash• Spray anti-rust lubricant on the gears andbearings before installation. Do not applygear oil to the parts. Otherwise, correctmeasurements cannot be obtained.• Keep the parts free of foreign material,such as dirt and lint.• When measuring the forward gear orreverse gear backlash, use the originalbearings and shims.1. Install the original forward gear shims,and then assemble the propeller shafthousing assembly. See steps 7–10 in“Assembling the propeller shaft housingassembly” (8-74).TIP:• If the original shims are missing, install newshims with a combined thickness of 1.12mm.• Do not reuse a shim if deformed orscratched.2. Install the propeller shaft housing assem-bly (without the O-ring and dog clutch).See step 2 in “Installing the propellershaft housing assembly” (8-84) and step4 in “Installing the propeller shaft housingassembly” (8-29). Check that the drive shaft turnssmoothly.4. Measure the forward gear backlash. Remove the propeller shaft housingassembly. Measure the thickness of each originalforward gear shim in 2 places.TIP:Do not reuse a shim if deformed orscratched.4.
