8-1068Measuring the reverse gear backlash• Spray anti-rust lubricant on the gears andbearings before installation. Do not applygear oil to the parts. Otherwise, correctmeasurements cannot be obtained.• Keep the parts free of foreign material, such as dirt and lint.• When measuring the forward gear orreverse gear backlash, use the originalbearings and shims.1. Install the original reverse gear shims.TIP:• If the original shims are missing, install newshims with a combined thickness of 0.65mm.• Do not reuse a shim if deformed orscratched.2. Install the retainer. See steps 3 and 4 in“Assembling the lower case” (8-83).3. Install the thrust bearing and reversegear assembly into the lower case.4. Install the pinion shims, drive shaft, pin-ion, and oil seal housing. See steps 2–5in “Installing the drive shaft” (8-28).(FL200B) See steps 2 and 3 in “Installingthe drive shaft” (8-35) and steps 4 and 5in “Installing the drive shaft” (8-28).(FL250G)5. Install the 2 pieces of washers (90201-31M00) and propeller shaft housingassembly (without the O-ring and dogclutch). See step 2 in “Installing the pro-peller shaft housing assembly” (8-84)and step 4 in “Installing the propellershaft housing assembly” (8-29).(FL200B) See step 2 in “Installing thepropeller shaft housing assembly” (8-84)and step 4 in “Installing the propellershaft housing assembly” (8-35).(FL250G)6. Check that the drive shaft turnssmoothly.7. Measure the reverse gear backlash. Seesteps 12, 13, and 21 in “Measuring theforward gear backlash and reverse gearbacklash before disassembly” (8-93).TIP:In the “Reverse gear shim (T1) selectionchart,” use the round-down average for thebacklash measurement (BL1).Adjusting the reverse gear shim (T1)thickness1. Remove the propeller shaft housingassembly. See step 1 in “Removing thepropeller shaft housing assembly” (8-16)and step 2 in “Removing the propellershaft housing assembly” (8-73).(FL200B) See step 2 in “Removing thepropeller shaft housing assembly” (8-22)and step 2 in “Removing the propellershaft housing assembly” (8-79).(FL250G)2. Remove the retainer and original reversegear shims. See step 2 in “Disassem-bling the lower case” (8-82).3. Measure the thickness of each originalreverse gear shim in 2 places.TIP:Do not reuse a shim if deformed orscratched.4. Determine the reverse gear shim (T1)thickness adjustment using the “Reversegear shim (T1) selection chart” accordingto the backlash measurement (BL1) from“Measuring the reverse gear backlash.”See “Reverse gear shim (T1) selectionchart” (8-108).Example:Backlash measurement (BL1) = 1.00 mm aReverse gear shim (T1) thickness adjustment= 0.28 mm bThe current shim thickness must beincreased by 0.28 mm.Reverse gear backlash:0.43–0.96 mm (0.0169–0.0378 in)Shimming (counter rotation model)
