A-4Understanding SCSIPreparing SCSI Devices for InstallationWhen preparing to install SCSI devices, make sure to Check the SCSI IDs. Ensure that the SCSI Card 2930CU andeach SCSI device you want to connect to it has a unique SCSIID. See SCSI IDs on page A-2 for more information. Use only high-quality SCSI-2 cables to ensure reliable datatransfer. See Chapter D, Obtaining SCSI Cables for moreinformation. Terminate the ends of the SCSI bus. The SCSI device at the endof each cable, or the end of the cable itself, must have aterminator installed or enabled. Terminators must be disabledor removed from SCSI devices that will be connected betweenthe ends of the SCSI cable. See Terminating the SCSI Bus onpage A-3 for more information. You may need to install the manufacturer’s proprietary devicedrivers if you use SCSI devices other than hard disk drives andCD-ROM drives. (Refer to your device’s documentation.)Using SCSI DevicesHard Disk DrivesEvery SCSI hard disk drive connected to you SCSI card must bephysically low-level formatted, partitioned, and logicallyformatted before it can be used to store data. Refer to yourcomputer and operating system documentation for instructions.Caution: A low-level format destroys all data on the drive. Besure to back up your data before performing a low-level format. If you are booting from a SCSI hard disk drive, make sure the HardDisk (or Drives) setting in your computer’s CMOS setup program isset to None or No Drives Installed. Refer to your computer andoperating system documentation for instructions. If both SCSI and non-SCSI (for example, IDE) hard disk drives areinstalled, the non-SCSI hard disk drive is usually the boot drive.!
