The generator can operate safely, effi-ciently and reliably only if it is properly installed, operated andm aintained. Many accidents are caused by failing to follow si mpleand funda m ental rules or precautions.The m anufacturer cannot anticipate every possible circumstancethat m ight involve a hazard. The warnings in this m anual, and ontags and decals affixed to the unit are, therefore, not all-inclusive. Ifusing a procedure, work m ethod or operating technique the m anu-facturer does not specifically recomm end, ensure that it is safe forothers. Also m ake sure the procedure, work m ethod or operatingtechnique utilized does not render the generator unsafe.DANGERDespite the safe design of this generator,operating this equipment imprudently, neglectingits maintenance or being careless can causepossible injury or death. Permit only responsibleand capable persons to install, operate and main-tain this equipment. Potentially lethal voltages are generated bythese machines. Ensure all steps are taken torender the machine safe before attempting towork on the generator.Parts of the generator are rotating and/or hotduring operation. Exercise care near runninggenerators.Installation must always comply with applicablecodes, standards, laws and regulations.A running generator gives off carbon monoxide,and odorless, colorless poison gas. Breathing incarbon monoxide can cause headaches, fatigue,diziness, nausea, vomitting, confusion, fainting,siezures or death.GENERAL HAZARDSFor safety reasons, the m anufacturer recomm ends that this equip-•m ent be installed, serviced and repaired by a S ervice D ealer orother competent, qualified electrician or installation technician whois fa m iliar with applicable codes, standards and regulations. Theoperator also must comply with all such codes, standards andregulations.The engine exhaust fum es contain carbon monoxide, which•can be DEADLY. This dangerous gas, if breathed in sufficientconcentrations, can cause unconsciousness or even death.Do NOT alter or add to the exhaust syste m or do anything thatm ight render the syste m unsafe or in noncompliance with appli-cable codes and standards.Install a battery operated carbon monoxide alar m indoors,•according to m anufacturer' s instructions/recomm endations.Adequate, unobstructed flow of cooling and ventilating air is•critical to correct generator operation. Do not alter the instal-lation or per m it even partial blockage of ventilation provisions,as this can seriously affect safe operation of the generator. Thegenerator MUST be installed and operated outdoors only.Keep hands, feet, clothing, etc., away from drive belts, fans,•and other moving or hot parts. N ever re move any drive belt orfan guard while the unit is operating.When working on this equip m ent, re m ain alert at all ti m es.•N ever work on the equip m ent when physically or m entallyfatigued.Inspect the generator regularly, and contact the nearest D ealer•for parts needing repair or replace m ent.Before perfor m ing any m aintenance on the generator, discon-•nect its battery cables to prevent accidental start up. D isconnectthe cable from the battery post indicated by a NE GATIVE, NE Gor (–) first, then re move the P OSITIVE, P OS or ( + ) cable. Whenreconnecting the cables, connect the P OSITIVE cable first, theNE GATIVE cable last.N ever use the generator or any of its parts as a step. S tepping•on the unit can stress and break parts, and m ay result in dan-gerous operating conditions from leaking exhaust gases, fuelleakage, oil leakage, etc.ENGINE EXHAUST HAZARDSG enerator engine exhaust contains DEADLY carbon monox-•ide, an odorless, colorless poisonous gas. Breathing carbonmonoxide can cause: dizziness, throbbing te mples, nausea,muscular twitching, headache, vom iting, weakness and sleepi-ness, inability to think clearly, fainting, unconsciousness oreven death. If you experience any carbon monoxide poisoningsymptoms, move into fresh air and i mm ediately seek m edicalattention.N ever operate the generator set with the vehicle inside any•garage or other enclosed area.IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONSAir-cooled GeneratorsSAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS – The manufacturer suggests that these rules for safe operation be copied and posted nearthe unit’s installation site.
