S611 Soft Starter MN03902011E—May 2012 www.eaton.com 1IntroductionOverviewThe S611 soft starter from Eaton’s electrical sector is anelectronic, self-contained, panel- or enclosure-mountedmotor soft-starting device. It is intended to providethree-phase induction motors with a smooth start, bothmechanically and electrically. The S611 soft starters use sixSCRs composed of three SCR modules connected in a fullwave power bridge. Varying the SCR conduction periodcontrols the voltage applied to the motor. This in turn controlsthe torque developed by the motor. After the motor reachesspeed, internal contacts are closed to bypass the SCRs.The S611 has built-in communications capabilities via twocomms ports. Comms port A is a screw terminal block that isused for Modbus® RS-485 communications or communicationto an EATON HMI. Comms port B uses a printed circuitboard (PCB) connector that interfaces with three differentcommunications adapters; PROFIBUS®, DeviceNet andModbus communications adapters. Modbus communicationmay be accomplished via either comms port A and/or commsport B. In the event that the communications adapter locatedat comms port B adds excessive height to the S611, theadapter may be mounted to the side of the S611 and wiredto comms port A using an L-Adapter in combination with theEaton brand communication adapters PROFIBUS, DeviceNetand Modbus. The S611 soft starter uses a User Interface Module (UI) thatallows the user to configure the device, read and writesystem parameters, and evaluate fault codes fortroubleshooting. The UI includes an easy-to-read display andkeypad to scroll through the parameters. The user interfacemodule allows the user to modify control parameters, enableor disable protections, set communication variables, monitorsystem parameters such as line voltages and currents, andaccess the fault queue. The S611 is designed to fulfill the industrial servicerequirements for applications such as chillers, pumps andmachine tools that require less than 85% of the motor’srated starting torque for worst case starting condition. The S611 meets all relevant specifications set forth byNEMA ICS 1, ICS 2 and ICS 5, UL 508, IEC 60947-4-2, andCSA 22.2/14-05.General Appearance NotesS611 Soft StarterControl Circuit Terminal Block (TB3)Relay Terminal Block (TB2)Control Power Terminal Block(TB1)User InterfaceModule (UI)MountingLocations (8)Load OutputsComms Port B(TB5)Line Inputs(Back of the Unit—Not Shown)Comms Port A Terminal Block(TB4)www.comoso.com
