User benefits include increased stability at startup and shutdown of the PCand better control of user visibility to resources. The only directories or printers that can beseen by end users are those set up as “shared” by an administrator or resource owner.NetServer brings the following additional benefits versus using built-in PC file and printserving functions, including:• No background tasks (such as cwbuitsk, cwbnpred, cwbsvd, cwbbs), which previouslyused extra battery power on laptops.• When using network drives to access integrated file system information or NetworkPrinters to use iSeries Network Printers, these resources were visible to all end userson the iSeries server. NetServer allows the administrator or owner of a resource tocontrol its visibility to end users. Creating a “share” enables viewing of that resource. Ifno share exists, users will not see the directories or printers.Desktop users can now fully satisfy their file and print serving needs through the iSeriesNetServer function. Therefore, all the file and print serving functions currently existing in theother iSeries Client Access clients have been removed from the Express client. To use theiSeries NetServer, only the Client for Microsoft Networks (shipped with Microsoft 32-bitoperating systems) with file sharing enabled needs to be installed on the PC.iSeries NetServer file and printer “shares” are easy to create, locate, and manage by usingthe Operations Navigator printer list and IFS list. The current file shares can be listedseparately to make it easy to quickly explore the contents of a file share or map a drive to it.File shares now support EBCDIC to ASCII conversion. The AFP Workbench Viewer is also provided so iSeries spooled files (AFP and SCS) or PCfiles (such as GIF, TIFF, and JPEG formats) can be viewed directly by a PC user. The AFPViewer provides many end-user productivity aids such as the ability to zoom in or search forspecific portions of a stored document.
