IV - 15Section 4 - Chapter 3 - TCP/IP Configuration and PrintingOKI OkiLAN 6120e User’s GuideTCP/IPConfiguring for TCP/IP NetworkPrintingMost computers that support TCP/IP network printinguse the Remote Line Printer Daemon (LPD) protocol. This protocol was originally part of the BerkeleySoftware Distribution (BSD) version of the UNIXoperating system. Remote LPD was quickly adopted asa de facto standard. As a result, Remote LPD is nowsupported by most versions of the UNIX operatingsystem and by many TCP/IP packages available forother operating systems. Configuration of Remote LPDprinting varies among vendors who supply TCP/IP.You may also use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) forprinting. Typically FTP is used to transfer files betweencomputers on a TCP/IP network. The OkiLAN 6120esimply prints the files it receives from FTP.Remote Print Queue NameThe Remote Print Queue Name determines whichprinter port will service the print job. The Remote PrintQueue Name may also be used to specify ASCII printjobs. Both Remote LPD and FTP have provisions forspecifying a Remote Print Queue Name. The OkiLAN 6120e looks at the last character of theRemote Print Queue Name to determine which printerport will service the print job. All Remote Print QueueNames should end with the number 1, 2, 3 or 4. If anumber is not specified, the OkiLAN 6120e will useprinter port 1.The OkiLAN 6120e is designed to handle manydifferent types of printers and print data. Typically youwill select the printer type for your printer in telnetunder the Configure Port option. However, if you areconnecting to an ASCII printer, you may wish to usethe OkiLAN 6120e to format the print data for yourprinter.
