Operating Instructions40ENGAGING THE BLADE DRIVE1. Set the engine throttle at about 1/3 speed. Donot attempt to engage the blade clutch athigh engine speeds. This will drastically shorten drive belt life. Use only moderate enginespeed when engaging the blade clutch.2. Engage the blade clutch by moving the bladeclutch lever forward SLOWLY. For disengagement, move the blade clutch lever backwardSLOWLY.EngagedPositionBlade Clutch EngagedDisengagedPositionBlade Clutch DisengagedCAUTIONAn operator presence switch (seat switch)will cause the engine to stop if the bladeclutch is engaged and the operator is not inthe seat. The function of this switch shouldbe checked by the operator raising off theseat and engaging the blade clutch; the en-gine should stop. If the switch is not work-ing, it should be repaired or replaced be-fore operating the mower. DO NOTdisconnect the safety switches; they arefor the operator’s protection.IMPORTANT: DO NOT engage the blade clutchwhen transporting the mower across drives, sidewalks, loose materials, etc. DO NOT engage theblade clutch with the PTO shaft disconnected(the mower deck removed from tractor).CAUTIONIf the cutting blades strike a stationary ob-ject while mowing, stop the mower imme-diately, disconnect the spark plug wires, lift the deck, and inspect the deck andblades thoroughly for damage. Also, makesure the blade retaining bolts are torquedto 70 lb·ft (95 N·m).STOPPING THE MACHINE1. Pull the steering levers to the NEUTRAL position and then move the FSC lever backward tothe NEUTRAL-PARK position.2. Slow the engine to a fast idle; put the throttle inthe 1/2 throttle position.3. Disengage the blade clutch.IMPORTANT: DO NOT disengage the bladeclutch with high engine speed (above 1/2 throttle) since the brake action on the blade drive willcause premature wear of the brake band.
