69Maintenance Instructions REPLACING/REPAIRINGFuel FilterDANGERGasoline is extremely flammable and canbe highly explosive. To minimize danger:● Before servicing the fuel system:1) Disconnect the spark plug leads.2) Disconnect the negative (-) batterycable from battery.● Use only an approved fuel containerfor gasoline.● DO NOT allow open flames or sparksnear the machine while performingmain tenance or refueling; DO NOTsmoke while working with fuel.● Wipe up spilled gasoline immediatelyand completely.Model H37i is equipped with a 20 micron inline fuelfilter (Briggs & Stratton P/N 845125) between thefuel tank and the fuel pump (low pressure pump).Replacement of this filter is recommended every200 hours of operation or when contamination issuspected or found in the fuel.Fuel PumpInLineFuel FilterFuel Filter LocationIMPORTANT: Replace the fuel filter only in a cleanarea where the fuel line and connections will not becontaminated by dust and dirt.1. Expand and slide clamps on either side of thefilter away from filter and pull fuel lines off filter.2. Replace filter, making sure that the arrow on thefilter is aligned with the fuel flow through thefilter.3. Verify that the fuel lines and clamps are securelyattached, and that no fuel leaks are present.Mower BladesMower blades are removed and remounted as described in Sharpen Mower Blades instructions (refer to CHECKING/SERVICING in this section). During the course of sharpening and inspecting mowerblades, if there are any of the following conditionsof wear or dam age, blades should be replacedfor reasons of safety and performance of the machine:● An excessive amount of the flat section of theblade has been ground away (removed) whenthe blade is sharpened. Replace the bladewhen less than a 3/4 in. (19 mm) flat sectionremains at the blade tip.● Examine ends of the blade carefully, especiallythe intersection where the flat section of theblade turns up to form the “wing tip” (refer toCHECKING/SERVICING for Mower BladePro file for Sharpening illustration in SharpenMower Blades instructions). Since sand andabrasive material can wear metal away in thisarea, the blade should be replaced when met-al thickness has worn to 1/16 in. (1.6 mm) orless.DANGERWhen blades are operated over sandysoil, and if blades are allowed to wear, a“slot” may be worn into the wing tip ofblade. Eventually a piece of the blademay break off creating a serious potentialfor injury or damage.● Check the blades for straightness by markingblade tip position inside the deck housing andthen rotating the opposite end of the blade to thesame position and comparing. If the differencein blade tip track is more than 1/8 in. (3 mm),the blade is bent and should be replaced.
