Operating Instructions44● When mowing, operate the engine at full throt-tle for the best cutting action. Mowing with alower engine RPM causes the mowing blade tonot cut clean and tear the grass. The engine isdesigned to be operated at full speed.● When mowing in adverse conditions (tall and/orwet grass), mow the grass twice. Raise themower to the highest setting 5 in. (127 mm)for the first pass and then make a second passcutting to the desired height.● Use a slow setting on the FSC for trimmingoperations.● Make sure the mower is leveled properly for asmooth cut. Refer to Deck Leveling in AssemblyInstructions.● Use an alternating stripe mowing pattern forbest appearance and vary the direction of thestripe each time the grass is mowed to avoidwear patterns in the grass.● Avoid damage to the grass by slipping and skidding of the drive tires. Use smooth controlmove ments of the steering levers since thetransaxles are “power boosted controls” andjerking the levers can easily slip the tires. Forsharp turns, do not allow the inside wheel tostop and twist on grass; pull inside steering leverinto reverse for a smooth “rolling” turn (onewheel rolling forward while the other rolls backward).● Using the DS61 deck, or other side dischargedecks, the side discharge deflector shield mustnot be removed and must be kept in the lowestpossible position to deflect grass clippings andthrown objects downward. Orient the side discharge away from sidewalks or streets to minimize cleanup of clippings. When mowing closeto obstacles, orient the side dis charge awayfrom obstacles to reduce the chance of damageto property by thrown objects.Discharge ShieldSide Discharge DeflectorShield in Lowest Position● When operating on a slope, reduce speed anduse caution to start, stop, and maneuver. Avoidsharp turns or sudden changes in direction.
