The bolt has teeth on it. So when thebolt is turned, it rides up and down the bracket. The nut has to be loosened first, while the bolt is held in place with a wrench. Then the bolt can be turned to adjust the shock position up or down. If the bolt is turned with the nut tight, it is possible to strip the teeth off the bolt.
