7 - 50 Genie S-80 & Genie S-85 Part No. 34032Service Manual - First EditionSection 7 - Repair Procedures15-1Extendable AxlesThe extendable axles are used to widen the footprint of the drive chassis for stability. How to Shim the Extendable AxleMeasure each wear pad. Replacethe pad if it is less than 7 /16 inch(11 mm) thick. If the pad is morethan 7 /16 inch (11 mm) thick, perform the following procedure.1 Extend the axle.2 Remove the wear pad mounting fasteners.3 Install the new shims under the wear pad toobtain zero clearance and zero drag.4 Use a round punch to align the shim to thewear pad. Install the mounting fasteners.5 Extend and retract the axle through an entirecycle. Check for tight spots that could causescraping or binding.Always maintain squarenessbetween the outer and inner axletubes. How to Remove the Inner AxleThis procedure requires specificrepair skills and a suitableworkshop. Attempting thisprocedure without these skillsand tools may result in death orserious injury and significantcomponent damage. Dealerservice is strongly recommended.1 Extend the axle to be removed.2 Loosen the wheel lug nuts. Do notremove them.3 Block the wheels on the opposite end of themachine, and then center a lifting jack underthe axle to be removed.Extendable Axle Components4 Raise the machine 15 inches (38 cm) and placeblocks under the chassis for support.5 Remove the lug nuts, then remove the tire andwheel assembly.Non-steer end: proceed to step 9.Steer End:6 Remove the pin retaining fasteners. Thenremove the pivot pins from the steer cylinderand tie rod cylinder. Pull the cylinders off of theyoke/hub assembly.7 Remove the steer cylinder mounting lug fromthe inner axle.8 Disconnect the axle extension cylinderhydraulic hoses at the tee next to the lift jack.Do not disconnect them from the cylinder.4WD Models:Disconnect and plug the hydraulic hosesfrom the wheel motor. Cap the wheel motorhydraulic fittings.Bodily injury hazard. Sprayinghydraulic oil can penetrate andburn skin. Loosen hydraulicconnections very slowly to allowthe oil pressure to dissipategradually. Do not allow oil tosquirt or spray.9 Remove the drive chassis cover.10 Remove the retaining ring from the axleextension cylinder pivot pin. Then remove thepin.11 Disconnect and plug the hydraulic hosesfrom the wheel motor. Cap the wheel motorhydraulic fittings.Bodily injury hazard. Sprayinghydraulic oil can penetrate andburn skin.
