7. Touch the static-protective package that contains the DIMM to any unpaintedmetal surface on the outside of the server. Then, remove the DIMM from thepackage.8. Turn the DIMM so that the DIMM keys align correctly with the connector.9. Insert the DIMM into the connector by aligning the edges of the DIMM with theslots at the ends of the DIMM connector (see “System-board optional deviceconnectors” on page 19 for the locations of the DIMM connectors).10. Firmly press the DIMM straight down into the connector by applying pressureon both ends of the DIMM simultaneously. The retaining clips snap into thelocked position when the DIMM is firmly seated in the connector.Note: If there is a gap between the DIMM and the retaining clips, the DIMMhas not been correctly inserted; open the retaining clips, remove the DIMM,and then reinsert it.11. Replace the DIMM air baffle (see “Installing the DIMM air baffle” on page 133).12. Reconnect any cables that you removed.13. Replace the cover (see “Installing the cover” on page 130).14. Reconnect the power cord and any external cables that you removed.15. Turn on the peripheral devices and the server.Removing a fanThe server comes with five replaceable fans.To remove any of the five replaceable fans, complete the following steps:1. Read the safety information that begins on page vii and “Installation guidelines”on page 127.2. Turn off the server and all peripheral devices, and disconnect the power cordsand all external cables.3. Remove the server from the rack and remove the cover (see “Removing thecover” on page 130).4. Reconnect the power cord; then, turn on the server.Attention: Operating the server for extended periods of time (more than 30minutes) with the cover removed might damage server components.5. Determine which fan to replace by checking the LEDs on the system board (see“System-board LEDs” on page 18); a lit LED indicates the fan to replace.6. Turn off the server; then, disconnect the power cord again.7. Remove the DIMM air baffle (see “Installing the DIMM air baffle” on page 133).8. Remove the failed fan from the server:Chapter 5.
