MicroprocessorThe following notes describe the type of microprocessor that the server supportsand other information that you must consider when you install a microprocessor:v The server supports one Intel land grid array (LGA) 1156 dual-core or quad-coremicroprocessor. The type, speed, and L3 cache of the microprocessor dependson the server model.v Read the documentation that comes with the microprocessor to determinewhether you have to update the server firmware. To download the most currentlevel of server firmware, go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.v The microprocessor uses an integrated voltage regulator on the system board.Removing the microprocessorTo remove the microprocessor, complete the following steps.1. Read the safety information that begins on page vii and “Installation guidelines”on page 127.2. Turn off the server and peripheral devices, and disconnect the power cordsand all external cables.3. Remove the server from the rack; then, remove the cover (see “Removing thecover” on page 130).4. Remove the air baffle (see “Removing the DIMM air baffle” on page 132).5. Remove the heat sink.CAUTION:The heat sink may become very hot during normal operation. Allow timefor the heat sink to cool down before you touch it.a. Loosen the screw on one side of the heat sink to break the seal with themicroprocessor.b. Press firmly on the captive screws and loosen them with a screwdriver.c. Use your fingers to gently pull the heat sink from the microprocessor.System boardHeat sinkAlignmentpole6. Lift the heat sink out of the server. After removal, place the heat sink on itsside on a clean, flat surface.Attention: Do not touch the thermal material on the bottom of the heat sink.Touching the thermal material will contaminate it. If the thermal material on themicroprocessor or heat sink becomes contaminated, contact your servicetechnician.Chapter 5. Removing and replacing server components 185
