8-29Remember: ABS does not changethe time needed to get a foot up tothe brake pedal or always decreasestopping distance. If you get tooclose to the vehicle in front of you, there will not be enough time to applythe brakes if that vehicle suddenlyslows or stops. Always leave enoughroom up ahead to stop, even withABS.Using ABSDo not pump the brakes. Just holdthe brake pedal down firmly and letABS work. The ABS pump or motormight be heard operating, and thebrake pedal might be felt to pulsate, but this is normal.Braking in EmergenciesABS allows the driver to steer andbrake at the same time. In manyemergencies, steering can help morethan even the very best braking.Parking BrakeThe vehicle has an Electric ParkingBrake (EPB). The switch for the EPBis in the center console. The EPBcan always be activated, even if theignition is OFF. To avoid draining thebattery, do not cycle the EPB toooften without the engine running. TheEPB can be left applied while thevehicle is parked. The system has a Park Brake Statuslight and a Park Brake Warning light.See Brake System Warning Light onpage 4-23. There are also threeDriver Information Center (DIC)messages. See Driver InformationCenter (DIC) on page 4-31 for moreinformation. In case of insufficientelectrical power, the EPB cannot beapplied or released. Before leaving the vehicle, check thepark brake status lamp to insure thepark brake is applied.srx.book Page 29 Monday, June 8, 2009 8:28 AM
