Application Gateway Administration GuideChapter 10 Transformed ApplicationsFeatures117Support for Multiple FormatsIP phones use a variety of operating system platforms, presentationlanguages, and screen sizes and have different bandwidth constraints. TheApplication Gateway manages these requirements on many devicesautomatically. The Application Gateway supports content in the followingformats:• HTML versions 4.0, 3.2, and 2.0• cHTML versions 4.0, 3.2, and 2.0• i-mode version 1.1 (preliminary testing completed)• XHTML versions 1.1 and 1.0• XML version 1.0• WML, version 1.1• Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) version 1.0• GIF, JPEG, BMP, and WBMP image formats• The formats required for supported IP phonesConversion FeaturesBy default, the Application Gateway converts application and web contentas follows:• Automatically recognizes devices and provides device-specificrendering of content. Devices send a device ID with requests; theApplication Gateway uses the device ID to determine the correctformatting for the requesting device.• Transcodes images (GIF and JPEG to BMP and WBMP) and reducescolor depth for bandwidth conservation.• Compresses and optimizes content (markup level optimization, URLrewriting to conserve bandwidth, page splitting to prevent memoryoverflow).• Provides real-time content parsing for best performance.• Splits pages into screen-sized portions for small devices and addsdevice-appropriate navigation.
