B–2 1765 Network Printer Configuration GuideInstalling a Flash-ROM Upgrade WithNetWareYou can upgrade the firmware on the 1765 LAN card byinstalling a flash-ROM upgrade. Unlike other read-onlymemory, flash-ROM is rewritable. This section describeshow to prepare for and install a flash-ROM upgradeusing NetWare.Preparing to InstallYou can not install a flash-ROM upgrade acrossLocalTalk. Remove any LocalTalk connections beforeperforming a flash-ROM upgrade.WARNING! During the flash-ROM upgrade LANcard settings restore to factory default values. Anychanges you have made will be lost. Use NEC 1765software to reconfigure the Silentwriter. Be sure to print aconfiguration page before installing the flash-ROMupgrade so you will know what values have beenchanged. To upgrade without restoring parameterswithout factory defaults, use FWTOOL to performfirmware upgrades. See “Installing a Flash-ROMUpgrade With FWTOOL” on page B-5.Installing the Upgrade in NetWare1. Insert the diskette containing the flash-ROMupgrade in the drive. (This example will usedrive a:)2. Log in to NetWare with supervisor privileges.3. Move to the public directory and run PCONSOLE.cd publicPCONSOLE4. In the Available Options menu select Print QueueInformation. The Print Queues menu opens.5. In the Print Queues menu select the queue for theprinter you wish to upgrade. The Print QueueInformation window opens.6. In the Print Queue Information window select theCurrent Print Job Entries option to open the queuewindow.7. Once the queue window is empty (all pending printjobs are complete), press the Insert key.8. In the Select Directory to Print From window enterthe directory name for the download file. In thisexample the directory is a:\.9. In the Available Files window select the firmwareupgrade file. It will have the format name>.dld.10. In the Print Job Configuration window selectPCONSOLE Defaults.11. In the New Print Job to be Submitted window makesure File Contents is set to byte stream.12. Set the Target Server to the printer you wish toupgrade.13. Turn off Print Banner.14. Turn the printer off, then on again.15. Press Escape to leave the Print Job Configurationwindow. Select Yes when the Save Changes windowopens.16. The firmware file appears in the queue window.When the firmware upgrade is complete print aconfiguration page to confirm the new firmwareversion. The firmware release number is shown atthe top of the configuration page.17. Press Escape four times to leave PCONSOLE.18. Click Yes to exit PCONSOLE.19. Use NEC 1765 software to restore LAN cardsettings.
