4–4 1765 Network Printer Configuration GuideRemote PrintersRemote printers connect to a file server or singleworkstation. Documents travel over the network to afile server and then to a print server which sends the fileto the Silentwriter 1765 for printing. In Remote Printer Mode the Silentwriter often uses aparallel cable to connect to the file server orworkstation. Other remote printer configurations useEthernet connections but the print server for the printerresides on a workstation or a file server.Remote Printers Connected by Ethernet: In remoteprinter mode the print server resides on aworkstation or a file server. If the print server resides on a workstation, theworkstation handles the entire printing process, reducing the workload on the file server. If the print server resides on a file server, the printserver is not considered an additional NetWareconnection. This is important for networks whichare close to their user license limits.Remote Printers Connected by Parallel Cable: If youuse a parallel cable to connect your Silentwriter inRemote Printer mode, you will not be able to use theNEC 1765 software to monitor the printer or theprogress of your print jobs except on theworkstation connected directly to your printer. Inaddition, parallel cable connections are muchslower than Ethernet connections. For these reasons, you will most likely want to use Ethernetconnections. However, if you use NetWare NOS anduse the Silentwriter to replace a printer that iscurrently connected to a remote file server or singleworkstation, you can avoid reconfiguring yournetwork by connecting the Silentwriter in RemotePrinter mode. In addition, connecting yourSilentwriter to a workstation with a parallel cabledoes not use a network connection, leaving morenetwork connections available for workstations orservers. If you choose Remote Printer mode, consider thefollowing.• In Remote Printer mode, NetWare software movesfiles from the file server to its print server and fromthere to the remote printer.• The remote print server can be either a NetWareLoadable Module (NLM) print server or a dedicatedDOS print server.- An NLM print server resides on a remote fileserver, uses PSERVER.NLM, and is used in bothNetWare 3.1x and 4.1.- A dedicated DOS print server resides on asingle workstation, uses PSERVER.EXE, and isused in NetWare 3.1x only.- Dedicated print servers have significantly betterperformance.• Using your Silentwriter as an NLM print servermight result in much slower printing speed.• If you are using your Silentwriter as a dedicatedDOS print server with a parallel cable connection, you will be able to monitor the printer withNEC 1765 software only from the workstation thatis locally connected to the printer. The figure on the next page shows a Silentwriter inRemote Printer Mode connected to a network with adedicated DOS print server. The figure shows theSilentwriter connected to the Ethernet. To use a parallelcable connection, connect the Silentwriter directly to theprint server.
