Installing a Flash-ROM Upgrade With ftp B–3B Flash-ROM UpgradeInstalling a Flash-ROM Upgrade WithftpYou can upgrade the firmware on the 1765 LAN card byinstalling a flash-ROM upgrade. Unlike other read-onlymemory, flash-ROM is rewritable. This section describeshow to prepare for and install a flash-ROM upgradeusing ftp.Preparing to InstallBefore you install a flash-ROM upgrade, you need thefollowing• You need a copy of ftp, the file transfer protocolsoftware. Ftp is included with Windows forWorkgroups, Windows 95, and Windows NT.• You need to know the LAN card’s IP address, whichis printed on the configuration page. See “Print aConfiguration Page” on page 2-13.• You can not install a flash-ROM upgrade acrossLocalTalk. Remove any LocalTalk connectionsbefore performing a flash-ROM upgrade.WARNING! During the flash-ROM upgrade LANcard settings restore to factory default values. Anychanges you have made will be lost. Use NEC 1765software to reconfigure the Silentwriter. Be sure to print aconfiguration page before installing the flash-ROMupgrade so you will know what values have beenchanged. To upgrade without restoring parameters tofactory defaults, use FWTOOL to perform firmwareupgrades. See “Installing a Flash-ROM Upgrade WithFWTOOL” on page B-5.Installing the Upgrade in Windows 951. Disconnect the LocalTalk connection.2. Turn the printer off, then on again.3. Insert the diskette containing the flash-ROMupgrade in the drive. (This example will usedrive a:)4. Click the Start menu. From the Programs submenuselect MS-DOS.5. If the printer is on a different segment than the host,make sure the printer has an entry in the routingtable. Use the route add command as followsroute add IP> IP>Some operating systems require a 0 after <host IP>.Check with your system administrator.6. Type ftp at the DOS prompt to run ftp.7. At the ftp prompt typeopen address>where <IP address> is the IP address of theSilentwriter.8. Ftp will prompt you for a user login. Press enter toaccept the default value (none).9. At the ftp prompt typebinaryto set the data transmission mode to binary.10. At the ftp prompt typeput a:\where is the name of the file containingthe new firmware.11. When the transfer is complete typequitto leave ftp.12. Type exit at the DOS prompt to return toWindows 95.13. Print out a new configuration page by pushing theconfiguration button to confirm that the firmwareupgrade was successful. The firmware releasenumber is shown at the top of the configurationpage.14. Use NEC 1765 software to restore LAN cardsettings.
