After you have movedthe shift lever into P (Park), holddown the regular brake pedal. See ifyou can move the shift lever awayfrom P (Park) without first pulling ittoward you. If you can, it means thatthe shift lever was not fully lockedinto P (Park).Torque LockTorque lock is when the weight ofthe vehicle puts too much force onthe parking pawl in the electric driveunit. This happens when parking ona hill and shifting the electric driveunit into P (Park) is not doneproperly and then it is difficult toshift out of P (Park). To preventtorque lock, set the parking brakeand then shift into P (Park).If torque lock does occur, yourvehicle may need to be pusheduphill by another vehicle to relievethe parking pawl pressure, so youcan shift out of P (Park).Shifting out of ParkTo shift out of P (Park), the vehiclemust be in ON/RUN, the brakepedal must be applied, and thecharge cord must be unplugged.The vehicle has an electronic shiftlock release system. The shift lockrelease is designed to:. Prevent the vehicle from turningoff unless the shift lever is inP (Park).. Prevent moving the shift leverout of P (Park), unless thevehicle is in ON/RUN, the brakepedal is applied, and the chargecord is unplugged.Parking the vehicle in extreme coldfor several days without the chargecord connected may cause theelectric drive unit to be locked inP (Park) until the propulsion systemhas warmed sufficiently.The shift lock is always functionalexcept in the case of an unchargedor low charged 12-volt battery (lessthan 9 volts).If the vehicle has an uncharged12-volt battery or a 12-volt batterywith low voltage, try charging orjump starting the 12-volt battery.See Battery on page 10-23 or JumpStarting on page 10-71.If the console shift lever cannot bemoved out of P (Park):1. Apply and maintain the regularbrakes.2. Turn the vehicle on using thePOWER O button. See PowerButton on page 9-16.3. Let up on the shift lever andmake sure the shift lever ispushed all the way into P (Park).4. Press the shift lever button.
