Operation will continue inERM until the vehicle can beplugged in to recharge the highvoltage battery and restoreElectric Mode.The high voltage battery willcontinue to provide some power andwork together with the engine toprovide peak performance when it isrequired, such as driving up a steepincline or for high accelerationmaneuvers. The battery will not becharged nor will electric vehiclerange be restored by the engine.In either Electric Mode or ExtendedRange Mode, when the hood isopen, the engine will run withoutturning off if the vehicle is on. Thehigh voltage battery is neithercharged nor discharged when thisoccurs.In either Electric Mode or ExtendedRange Mode, if there is a highvoltage battery fault, the engine mayrun without turning off to generateneeded electricity. The malfunctionindicator lamp will turn on. SeeMalfunction Indicator Lamp onpage 5-18.Driver Selected OperatingModesWhile driving in Electric or ExtendedRange Mode, additional operatingmodes can be selected.Press the MODE switch to displayselectable drive modes in the DriverInformation Center (DIC). Continuepressing to scroll through themodes.Highlight either the Mountain, Sport,or Hold Mode, then release theMODE switch. After three seconds,the new drive mode will becomeactive.Pressing the MODE switch againwill return to Tour Mode, andbecome active after three seconds.At next start, the vehicle will defaultto Tour Mode. Drive modes can thenbe selected again as desired.During some conditions, certaindrive modes may be unavailable.The unavailable mode is grayed outin the DIC menu and cannot beselected.
