See EngineCooling System Messages 0 142.If the decision is made not to lift thebonnet when this warning appears, getservice help right away.If the decision is made to lift thebonnet, make sure the vehicle isparked on a level surface. Then checkto see if the engine cooling fan isrunning. If the engine is overheating,the fan should be running. If it is not,do not continue to run the engine.Have the vehicle serviced.CautionRunning the engine without coolantmay cause damage or a fire. Vehicledamage would not be covered bythe vehicle warranty.If Steam Is Coming from theEngine Compartment{ WarningSteam from an overheated enginecan burn you badly, even if you justopen the bonnet. Stay away fromthe engine if you see or hear steamcoming from it. Just turn it off andget everyone away from the vehicleuntil it cools down. Wait until thereis no sign of steam or coolantbefore you open the bonnet.If you keep driving when the engineis overheated, the liquids in it cancatch fire. You or others could bebadly burned. Stop the engine if itoverheats, and get out of thevehicle until the engine is cool.If No Steam Is Coming from theEngine CompartmentIf an engine overheat warning isdisplayed but no steam can be seen orheard, the problem may not be tooserious. Sometimes the engine can geta little too hot when the vehicle:. Climbs a long hill on a hot day.. Stops after high-speed driving.. Idles for long periods in traffic.If the overheat warning is displayedwith no sign of steam:1. Turn the air conditioning off.2. Turn the heater on to the highesttemperature and to the highestfan speed. Open the windows asnecessary.3. When it is safe to do so, pull offthe road, shift to P (Park) orN (Neutral), and let theengine idle.If the engine coolant temperaturegauge is no longer in the overheatedarea or the engine coolanttemperature warning light no longerdisplays, the vehicle can be driven.Continue to drive the vehicle slowlyfor about 10 minutes. Keep a safedistance from the vehicle in front.If the warning does not come back on,continue to drive normally and havethe cooling system checked for properfill and function.
