xviIntroduction toNavTalk PilotSection 1Cellular Phone OverviewNow it’s time to learn the basics of operating the cellphone. Let’s begin with a brief overview of the cellulartelephone system. Your NavTalk Pilot cell phone usesradio waves instead of conventional telephone lines toplace and receive calls. A ground based cellular telephonenetwork consists of individual coverage areas (smallsections of a city, typically several miles in diameter)called “cells”. An air based cellular network is structuredin a similar manner with separate air cellular frequenciesthat are linked to a conventional cellular network. Each cell site has its own antenna located on a towerwhich is linked to a Mobile Telephone Switching Office(MTSO), which connects your call to the public switchedtelephone network or transfers it to another cellular phone. As you move from one location to another, your callis handed off to the next cell site to provide the best signalcoverage and call quality. This arrangement of multiplecells allows you to travel throughout a geographical areaand maintain a quality conversation as the call is handedoff from cell site to cell site. The signal is affected byatmospheric and geographic conditions that exist at thetime you place or receive a call. The NavTalk Pilot ispreprogrammed with a Number Assignment Module(NAM) for AirCell® service. You can only use AirCellservice when the unit is connected to the AirCell adapterinstalled in your aircraft. To view the current status ofAirCell coverage access the AirCell website at:www.aircell.com.Remember, you must subscribe to a ground cellularsystem (to get a ground based phone number) before youcan use your cell phone for ground based cellular phonecalls. If you haven’t been provided with a list of groundcellular service providers by your GARMIN Dealer, thenyou need to determine which of the service providers inyour area that you want to use. You may already have aservice provider for a current cell phone and you maywant to have your NavTalk Pilot programmed to acceptyour current number or add a new one.Important!Make sure you charge theNiMH battery pack for 14to 16 hours (TrickleCharger) before using yourNavTalk Pilot to ensureoptimum capacity andperformance.
