61Section 5Basic GPSUsing theSimulatorGPS OverviewFor an overview of the NavTalk Pilot GPS function,refer to Section 1 of this manual.Using the GPS Simulator ProgramThe Simulator is designed to introduce you to theapplication of the NavTalk Pilot basic GPS features using asimulated trip. The simulator tour assumes that the receiverhas been properly initialized as explained in this section,and that you have not changed any of the factory defaultsettings. If you have changed any settings (position formats,units of measure, etc.) the descriptions and pictures in thissection may not match your configuration.WARNING:Keep in mind that the receiverdoes not actually track satellites when in thesimulator mode and therefore should neverbe used for actual navigation. The receivercannot be turned on with the simulatormode active. If you forget to return it tonormal operation before turning the unit off,it will automatically return to normaloperation the next time you use it. However,if you switch from simulated navigation tothe cellular phone mode and then back toGPS mode, the unit will remain in thesimulated navigation mode.Initializing the GPS ReceiverBefore you can use the GPS Receiver it must beinitialized (given an opportunity to determine where it islocated on the globe). To initialize the NavTalk Pilot, takethe unit outside and find an open area where the antennahas a clear view of the sky. Hold the unit at a comfortableheight with the internal GPS antenna parallel to the ground.Since basic operation involves getting acquainted withthe GPS receiver, switch to the Satellite Status Page. If theCellular Status Page appears first press the GPS/PHONE key.I
