Service Manual February 2017Checklist E Procedures72 S-80 • S-85 • S-80X Part No. 1259369GTE-6Remove and Inspect the BoomExtend/Retract CablesGenie specifications require that this procedure beperformed after 12 years.Manufacturers specifications require that thisprocedure be performed by personnel that arecompetent in cable / wire rope inspection.Note: If the cables pass inspection and are notreplaced, the cables must be removed andinspected every 3 years until all boom cableshave been replaced.Note: Additional or more frequentinspections may be required due to thefollowing:• exposed to hostile or corrosiveenvironmental conditions.• boom is overloaded• sustains a shock load• electrical arcing• unused for extended periodsThe boom extend and retract cables areresponsible for the extension and retraction of theboom tubes. Inspection and replacement of theboom extend and retract cables, when required, isessential to good machine performance and safemachine operation. The boom extend and retractfunctions should operate smoothly and be free ofhesitation, jerking and unusual noise.1 Remove the boom extend and retract cables.Refer to the appropriate Service and RepairManual for repair procedure, How to Replacethe Boom Extend/Retract Cables.2 Inspect the sheaves for the following:• Broken or damaged sheaves• Unusual or excessive wear• All fasteners in place and secure• Bearings are secure• Bearings, excessive wearNote: A groove gauge should be used to check thecondition of the sheaves.Note: If one or more sheaves require replacement,the sheaves must be replaced as a set.1 good condition2 too tight - replace3 too loose - replace
