36 TASCAM DP-24SD6 - Basic RecordingUsing phantom powerWhen connecting a condenser microphone that requiresphantom power, press the PHANTOM (+48V) for INPUT A toD or INPUT E to H when the recorder is stopped to turn thephantom power on or off. When you turn the phantom power on, PHANTOM (+48V)button becomes lit and phantom power is supplied to the XLRjacks of INPUT A to D and/or INPUT E to H.When the GUITAR indicator is lit, however, INPUT H will notreceive phantom power even if phantom (+48V) power is ON(indicator lit) for E-H.CAUTION• Use the STEREO fader and MONITOR LEVEL knob to lowerthe output volume of the unit before turning phantompower on or off. Depending on the microphone, a loud noisecould occur, damaging equipment and harming people'shearing.• Do not connect or disconnect a microphone when phantompower is turned on. Doing so could cause a loud noise andmight damage this unit and connected equipment.• Turn phantom power on only when using a condensermicrophone that requires phantom power. Turningphantom power on when a dynamic mic or other mic thatdoes not require it is connected could damage this unit andconnected equipment.• When using condenser mics that require phantom powerand dynamic mics together, be sure to use balanceddynamic mics. Unbalanced dynamic mics cannot be usedwhen phantom power is enabled.• Supplying phantom power to some ribbon mics will breakthem. If you are unsure, do not supply phantom power to aribbon mic.MonitoringMonitoring is an important element of the recording andmastering process. You can use an external monitoring system(self-powered monitor speakers, amplifier equipped withspeakers, etc.) or headphones to monitor the sound of this unit.Use the MONITOR LEVEL knob to adjust the level of themonitoring system.Monitor selectionBesides the stereo bus, this unit allows you to monitor thebounce bus (see “Bouncing tracks” on page 43) or Effect Sends1/2.In the Effect Sends monitoring, you can monitor the signalsbeing sent to the effects.1. When the Home screen is displayed, press the MONITORSELECT button to open the MONITOR SELECT pop-upwindow.2. Use the JOG/DATA dial or the CURSOR (5/b) buttons toselect the monitor destination.STEREO (default)Select this to monitor the stereo signal of the stereo bus.BOUNCESelect this to monitor the stereo signal of the bounce bus.EFFECT SEND 1Select this to monitor the mono signal of the Effect Send 1.EFFECT SEND 2Select this to monitor the mono signal of the Effect Send 2.3. After selecting the monitor destination, press the MONITORSELECT button to return to the Home screen.OL indicators and level metersYou can check the audio signal levels of this unit through the OLindicators for INPUT A to H and the level meters shown on thedisplay. The level meters allow the signal levels to be monitored, andthey can also be used to confirm whether signals are beinginput into the unit. For example, if the level meters assigned toinputs A to H on the Home screen are moving, this means thatsignals are being input into the unit even if you cannot hearanything when monitoring. As shown below, if a red line " " appears at the top of a levelmeter, the level is too high (it stays on screen for a while beforeautomatically disappearing). If the level is too loud, the soundmight be distorted, so lower the level until the red line " "stops appearing. If an OL indicator lights, the signal from the input source mightbe too loud or the TRIM knob set too high.If the OL indicator lights even though the TRIM knob is set tothe LINE position, the input source signal is too loud, so lowerthe volume on the input source.Overload indication8 Overload indicators (A to H)The overload indicators for inputs A to H on the display showthe overload of the input level (INPUT A to H) of this unit.Use the TRIM knobs of INPUT A to H or the output volumecontrols of the input sources to adjust the level.
